Probationary Driver's Licence

When can I get my probationary licence?
To get your probationary licence you must;
- Have turned 18 (Victoria)
- Have held a learner permit for a continuous period of at least six months, or if you have turned 25, for a continuous period of at least three months
- Not be disqualified from driving in the State (you are applying) or overseas
Each State has different age requirements and you should check these before you apply.
How will I be tested?
Generally, you will have to undergo an eye sight chart to test your vision, a practical driving test to assess your driving skills and a computerized 'Hazard Perception' test to see how safely you respond to traffic conditions.
What do I have to do in the practical driving test?
The practical driving test will test your driving skills for approximately 20 minutes. You will be asked to perform a number of driving tasks and will be assessed on your ability to perform these tasks.
- Control of the vehicle
- Obeying Road Rules
- Co-operate with other road users
- Show you have acceptable safe-driving skills
These tasks will include reverse parking, angle parking, a three point turn or straight line reverse.
If you do anything unsafe or illegal the test will be stopped and you will fail.
Generally, you will perform the practical drive test prior to the computerized Hazard perception test.
If you do not pass the practical drive test, you will be given the opportunity to sit for the Hazard perception test or you can re-schedule both tests for another time.
If you pass your practical drive test but are unsuccessful on the hazard perception test, you will only need to re-sit the computerized test at another time.
If you pass either test successfully it will remain valid for a twelve month period.
Restrictions on Probationary drivers?
A number of restrictions are placed on probationary drivers (each State will vary) but generally you will be required to do the following:
- Display P plates on the front and rear of the vehicle for a three year period
- Carry your driver’s licence on you at all times when you are driving
- If you pass your practical driving test in an automatic vehicle you will be permitted to only drive an automatic vehicle whilst you are a probationary driver (3 years)
- You must have a zero blood alcohol reading at all times when driving
- You will not be permitted to drive high powered vehicles – these are cars which have a power to weight ratio greater than 125 kilowatts per tonne or with capacity to weight ratio of more than 3.5 litres per tonne.
